Course Rating

The North Central Pennsylvania Golf Association is certified by the USGA to perform obstacle and slope rating for golf courses in accordance with the USGA handicap system. NCPGA course rating teams have rated a wide variety golf courses in Central Pennsylvania. The USGA requires courses to be rated a minimum of every ten years in order for that golf course to use the previously provided USGA course rating. In addition, since the rating of a golf course controls the handicaps of the players, it is important to have your golf course rated on a regular basis.

The NCPGA’s rating process:

  • An appointment is scheduled on a weekday, or during low traffic times to avoid conflicts with players.
  • A rating team of four to eight members, depending on the number of tee sets that require rating, will come to rate the golf course.
  • An NCPGA committee reviews the rating to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • The NCPGA provides the club with official documentation of the course rating and slope rating calculated.

Interested in becoming a course rater? From time to time, the NCPGA conducts training seminars to certify volunteers. Contact us to find out when we’re holding our next seminar.

Before a course can be rated, the club must:

  • Acquire the Official USGA Course Rating Form O by sending a request to ncpga2@uplink.net.
  • Send completed form to:

Joe Faust
545 Larch Road
Sunbury, PA 17801

  • Establish a time to be rated with the NCPGA.
  • Make members aware of the presence of the rating team, and arrange the course in the standard fashion. (Please do not set up the course in an abnormally difficult fashion).
